| TV recording as a bonus |
|
I have recently bought a cheap USB video capture device. I wanted to transfer some old VHS tapes I had and I thought this would be a good thing. Before buying I read some Internet reviews and, in general, the comments were: the hardware is good but the software is really poor. I have to agree with these reviews, I haven't managed to use the software properly (but I knew I could code my way around most limitations so I didn't care). On the other hand, I realized that I could record TV programs using the card. Essentially, I connect the RCA video output from my old VCR to the capture device and the audio signal from the VCR to my computer microphone input, build a simple graph in GraphEdit with an ASFWriter, and voila.
The default profile on the ASFWriter used around 100Megs for a hour program (ok, the
quality is not great). Nevertheless, I get the functionality of a TV tuner card
for "free". |
