Patent-free videos PDF Print E-mail

I have written a small app in C# that uses the DirectShow filters for Ogg to transcode to Ogg Theora on Windows. I thought some of you might find it useful. You can download it from here.

After the recent court decision (see link, for example), people might get more interested in patent-free codecs and containers. I've read negative comments about Theora but after trying it, I find it good enough for many situations. In fact, I've used the above application to transcode many videos I have to Theora (and get rid of the "patent-loaded" versions).

Native vs managed arrays revisited PDF Print E-mail

In my entry of January 10th, I showed how I rewrote managed 2D arrays in order to speed things up. While browsing "Improving .Net application performance and scalability" by MS Press, I remembered the advice to use jagged arrays instead of managed 2D arrays. So I ran some tests, in order to compare my native version and a jagged arrays version.

The performance of jagged arrays is much better but it's still 5% to 15% slower than the native version I wrote. So I'll stick to it.
