I've been using Dowitchers for the past few months and I like it a lot. At the moment, I can play most AVIs, FLVs, Mpeg1/2s and WMVs files. This could make the basis for a media player based on Dowitchers but there are already quite a few media players out there. What makes Dowitchers attractive, beside having the source code, is the ability to write filters in a .Net language. DirectShow doesn't allow this, supposedly for performance reason. But in my experience, if a managed filter is too slow, most likely a C/C++ version will not be much better. The answer is exploiting the hardware, for example, through assembly or shaders code.

The documentation for writing DS filters, beside the contents of the SDK, is fairly limited. Dowitchers will not need a lot of documentation for this because it simplifies this task so much.

I intend to start writing a few tutorials about this aspect in the near future. So stay tune.
